The fact there are some coming out in Hollywood to say that Roman Polanski should not be extradited or have to face the sentence of rape that he plead to some 30 years ago should be a stinging indictment to the average American (regardless of political stripe / view) just how far out of step Hollywood and their views are with mainstream society.
Admittedly I was not surprised to hear that people like Whoppie Goldberg and Woody Alan were arguing for Polanski not to face the consciences of his actions,. They both seem to have a long history of being out of step with the views of the majority of America, but the fact that there are so so so many joining them in this chorus and few in Hollywood are issuing rebukes of their peers speaks volumes. Silence when others speak falsely or pursue evil is complicit.
Something tells me many of the same people that are calling for Roman Polanski to avoid justice, would still want a Ex Nazi deported and sent to prison, or someone that killed a actor in a DUI 30 years ago and got away sent away today. Yet, when it is one of their own the rules / personal cost should be different. That is not the way it is in my world.
If this was a unknown 70 something year old guy who had been on the lamb for 30 years it would still be on CNN / Fox / CBS / ABC / NBC, but the story would be different. The story would be about how he had been protected by others and never faced punishment for his terrible act. It would be about how justice is finally being served. It would be about how we can not run from the cost of our actions forever.
Polanski had sex with a 13 year old girl and he knew it. He admitted to it. There is no excuse for that. You can’t argue well it was not rape, he plead to rape. Now there are rumors of mistakes / lies in the case and the victim does not want to go through the harsh light of publicity again, but he still deserves to do the time for what he was sentenced for.
I have friends with daughters about that age, and the thought of adults raping them disgust me. If this had happened to someone else they should / would be under the jail if not underground by now if some families got to them.
In the world of Hollywood though such rules / ideas are crazy. The “talented” get a pass for their missteps. It was this or that that caused them to act. They are not responsible, the victim or the world or their parents or something else is, but never them.
Many in Hollywood seem to be saying “Why silence / limit the voice of a “genius” for something he did 30 years ago?” Because he violated the law and plead out. He should do the time that is why. I don’t care if he made The Pianoist or if he made Istar, he should have to follow the law like everyone else. The fact that some want to give him a pass due to his fame and the lengthy of time that has past is not sufficient in my book and shows just how out of touch they are.
