Well Mark Stanford, Republican governor of South Carolina, will keep his job. The South Carolina House Judicary committee voted to only censure Stanford and not move toward impeachment. The full South Carolina legislature will still have to vote on the censure but it seems that it will likely pass without a problem. This vote to only censure Stanford, means Stanford will remain governor of SC, even after admitting his affairs and all the issues that were involved with his affair. The NY Times has a complete story on the news here, as does Reuters here and AP here.
Of course the really story / fact here for me is that Sanford did not step down or resign. Honestly the SC legislature should not have to impeach Sanford as he should step down. I am getting tired of elected / powerful people making other elected / powerful people do their dirty work. If you take the job, take the responsibility for your actions / motivates / activities as well.
I don’t care if you are Republican or Democrat or Independent or that you are a Governor or Mayor or Dog Catcher – if you are an elected official and you disgrace your office or abuse your power / position you should step down and let someone do the job. At lease exit the job like you deserved the job to begin with. Voters / citizens deserve better, even if they don’t act like it at times. Even if no one else notices/ cares, if you are elected to a job you should respect the job enough to not disrespect it or the title / duties you hold. To me Sanford is just one more in a long line of leaders (political, social, industrial, etc) that needs to act like the person they claimed to be.
