Local Knoxvilleians probably already know about the shooting of a shoplifter at the South Knoxville Wal Mart two nights ago – (updated story here). It seems that Zachary Blaine Russell was shopping lifting light bulbs and that cost him his life. I must admit my first question was what type of lamps – incandscent, LED, [...]

The New York Times has a interesting piece up today (link here) about how some college dropouts go on to make millions and billons (at times). One of the most interesting points the story makes is that the often quoted about 80% of the jobs created are in small business, actually the vast majority of [...]

Though many are discussing the parts of Paul Allen’s forthcoming biography where he, Mr. Allen, alleges that Bill Gates, Steve Ballmer and others tried to cheat him out of a large part and the value of Microsoft’s stock. To me though the more interesting thing is Mr Allen’s discussing (summarized at FT.com here) where and [...]

Since the release of radiation from the Japanese nuclear reactors at Fukushima Daiichi is in the news I thought it may be a good time to post a link to a site about radition levels. The site discusses what is natural, what is normal, what common actions are risky, and what levels of exposure are [...]

Well it seems that the eBook is here to stay as even the Knoxville Public Library (known to many as one of the slowest reacting governmental agencies East of Nashville) has begun to actively “check out” eBooks. They are offering them in online now – story here. Every hipster on Market Square rejoiced in unison [...]

Ray Kurzweil, a man that I have always found to be creative, inventive and genius, but who I disagree with on several major issues, has felt for several years that it is not a matter of if, but a matter of when that computers will become self aware and more intelligent then humans. From this [...]

Since Bob Dylan played the Grammy’s a few days ago, I thought I would post the 2009 story about Bob Dylan being mistaken for a homeless man in New Jersey while on tour. ABC News story here If I had been Dylan I would have responded with “No, no, no, it ain’t me, babe … [...]

Found a very interesting article online about Ford’s new “supercharged” hybird that could offer a 500 mile range and overnight charging on 120V power. Very interesting stuff. Still waiting for a medium sized to full sized sedan or full sized SUV that is averaged price before my family makes the move, but steps like this [...]

H/T to Pseudo-Polymath for this one Siris has a great post up about how many in the media are building stories about the AZ shooter without facts. I am tried of there being a rush to attach the acts of the insane to voices of descent on either side or to people that have no [...]

Currently the most promising one is a 16 year girl named Hou Yifan who recently one a chess championship. Full story [...]

Well since it has been a long time since I published a update on how life is around the Being Frank world, I thought it would be a good time (as the blog is being rebooted) for that to occur. It seems fitting for the first post back to be about why we have been [...]

For those that care, or if there are any regular readers from a year or so back when the blogging was regular around here, we plan to be back blogging regularly in 2011. This post should be the first in that process. Currently, the aim is for there to be 3 to 5 postings a [...]

Those that care probably already know that 3 time TDF (Tour De France) winner Alberto Contador tested positive for having a antibiotic steroid in his blood. Well not sure how I missed it, but the future of Open Office (my personal long time favorite for all those that need an office suite but don’t have $200 to throw away for basic Word / Excel compatibility)is looking brighter. It seems that the very thing that Open Office has needed for awhile, a [...]

The NY Times as a piece up (here) on the results of a recent Pew Study on religious knowledge in America. I would be lying if I said I was surprised by the results – bottom line few American’s know a lot about their faith or the faiths of others. It turns out that Atheists, [...]

CNN.com has a nice piece up about some new Ansel Adams prints that may (big MAY) have been discovered. It seems that a guy bought some glass negatives at a yard sale, kept them around for a few years (under his pool table), and then realized they may be pretty valuable. A LA art dealers [...]
Lucas films is requesting that a Hong Kong based firm called Pro Arctic Laser pull their product series called “Wicked Lasers” from the market due to their resemblance to lightsabers used in the Star Wars movies. The Daily Mail had a nice post up on June 26th that summarized 10 theories (Quantum Field Theory and The Finite Universe just to name two) in just a few paragraphs. This is a nice way to get a jump start on understanding some relatively complex ideas. Even if you don’t agree with, or even [...]

I first heard about this big move this AM on the radio, tonight I found a story on WBIR about it. It seems that a 23 foot wide and 250+ long steam generator, and a cadre of support vehicles, is moving from the Forks of The River to a St Paul, Virginia. That is a 170 [...]
Reuters has been busted again for photoshop’n a image. It is becoming harder and harder to believe the news and what we are seen. This time they took a knife and a blood pool out of a picture showing “peaceful” Palestinian’s confronting and holding Israeli Security Forces hostage. Full story at Little Green Footballs here.

Looks like someone (the Korean’s in this case) has developed a means of proximity charging (charging batteries without cables) in a larger scale then cell phone batteries. In this case it is a trolley at the zoo, but such a method could really be interesting as it reduces battery size and does not requires stopping. [...]

Vanity Fair has a great story up about Marc Drier.
