by 53X11 on December 10, 2011

Interesting news at Velo News a few weeks back. Shimano is upping Dura Acce’s rear cassette to 11 in their 2013 offering. This will match Campy’s 11 speed rear end which has been on the market for 3 years. The 2013 Dura Ace set will be series 9000 (a change from the current 7900 series). [...]

by 53X11 on July 6, 2011

A friend of mine sent me a link about a interesting story about a London hotel that has installed three integral wind turbines into the building. It is London’s Strata SE1, a 43-story, 408-apartment project, and it is the first building in the world to do that. The three turbines generate approximately 8% of the [...]

by 53X11 on April 14, 2011

Porsche has a new hybird sports car, the Spyder 918, coming out (story here) . The car gets 78mpg and cost $845,000. Even with gas at $4 a gallon that is a a long payback over cars like Prius’s, Leaf’s, Volt’s, and heck even a Hummer H2 may never cost you $800,000 (assuming you pay [...]

Allen on Microsoft’s Misstep’s

by 53X11 on March 30, 2011

Though many are discussing the parts of Paul Allen’s forthcoming biography where he, Mr. Allen, alleges that Bill Gates, Steve Ballmer and others tried to cheat him out of a large part and the value of Microsoft’s stock. To me though the more interesting thing is Mr Allen’s discussing (summarized at FT.com here) where and [...]

by 53X11 on March 4, 2011

Well it seems that the eBook is here to stay as even the Knoxville Public Library (known to many as one of the slowest reacting governmental agencies East of Nashville) has begun to actively “check out” eBooks. Singularity coming to computers near you in 2045

by 53X11 on February 15, 2011

Ray Kurzweil, a man that I have always found to be creative, inventive and genius, but who I disagree with on several major issues, has felt for several years that it is not a matter of if, but a matter of when that computers will become self aware and more intelligent then humans. From this [...]

Wall-E the wire runner

by 53X11 on January 21, 2011

Found this interesting story at the NY Times about a wire checking robot which crawls high energy wires searching for issues. The robot eliminates / reduces the need for expensive helicopter examinations, can reach remote places faster then ground based vehicles or employees hiking in and it runs of stray voltage from the line. Very [...]

Supercharged Hybrid

by 53X11 on January 12, 2011

Found a very interesting article online about Ford’s new “supercharged” hybird that could offer a 500 mile range and overnight charging on 120V power. Very interesting stuff. Still waiting for a medium sized to full sized sedan or full sized SUV that is averaged price before my family makes the move, but steps like this [...]

OpenOffice now really open

by 53X11 on October 4, 2010

Well not sure how I missed it, but the future of Open Office (my personal long time favorite for all those that need an office suite but don’t have $200 to throw away for basic Word / Excel compatibility)is looking brighter. It seems that the very thing that Open Office has needed for awhile, a [...]

The NY Times had an article on the trends / steps in high school and college – focusing on Central Florida University and turnitin.com – to stop cheating (full story here). PC World has a interesting piece up discussing Google’s idea to suggest Enterprises / Corporations stay on their current version of Office (instead of upgrading to Office 2010) and begin to use / integrate Google Docs into their infrastructure as a means of web / cloud / shared components. Google’s idea is centered around the [...]

Proximity Charging

by 53X11 on March 28, 2010

Looks like someone (the Korean’s in this case) has developed a means of proximity charging (charging batteries without cables) in a larger scale then cell phone batteries. In this case it is a trolley at the zoo, but such a method could really be interesting as it reduces battery size and does not requires stopping. [...]

by 53X11 on January 29, 2010

Engadget covered the release of a new laptop with USB 3.0 built in, though supporting devices are largely vaporware at this time. The Engadget piece also discusses competing standards, wondering if this could [...]

Users <> CNN @ $1.99

by 53X11 on September 30, 2009

CNN is rolling out a new Iphone app for $1.99. That is a fair price, but if their competition Fox, MSNBC, NBC, CBS, etc do not charge for their apps then I am not sure that they will get as many downloads as they expect – even at $1.99. It may be a new revenue [...]

Tesla and Fisker Funding Debate

by 53X11 on September 29, 2009

It seems that some of the taxpayer money the US government decided to give out to help car companies went to higher end eco car start up companies (Tesla and Fisker respectively) when other similar bid requests were denied. Some government watch dog groups are wandering if Fisker’s relationship with Al Gore may have helped [...]
